Philippians 2:5-11
On December 11, 1936, King Edward VIII stepped down from his throne because of his love for the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Because he was king of England, it made him the head of the church of England, which prohibited marriage after divorce. So by law, he could not marry someone who had been married before. So King Edward, adamant to marry Mss Simpson, stepped down from his throne.
In Philippians 2, we read about the Lord Jesus stepping down from his throne. He stepped down from His throne because of his love for every one of us.
I want you to notice first the eternal deity of Jesus Christ. In verses 5-6, Paul speaks of Jesus being in the form of God. He didn’t mean in shape. He meant the nature of God. Paul meant Jesus was God.
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus said in John 10:30, “I and my Father are one.”
There are those today who argue that we serve three Gods: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They say 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. Correct math, wrong theology… 1 x 1 x 1 = 1. Jesus Christ is essentially God.
