1 Samuel 17:2-29
This is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. David, a young shepherd boy, standing around 5’5″ tall against the giant, Goliath at around 10′ tall.
The picture is of two mountains, and there is a valley between them around the size of a football field. The Philistines are on one side, and the Israelites, let by Saul, are on the other side.
Every morning and evening, Goliath would call out to Israel to remind them of the fight they were facing. Saul and Israel were terrified of Goliath.
Then, here came David. David was the youngest of Jesse’s sons. Jesse’s three oldest sons were camped out with the army of Saul, and Jesse sent David to take some food to his brothers. David heard the men in Saul’s army talking about how big and mean Goliath was, and he began to talk to them. In verse 29, David replied, “Is there not a cause?”
Goliath had everyone so scared with all his yelling and taunting them. They could see his strength, and they were terrified. They were so terrified that they forgot why they were even there. David said, “Is there not a cause?”
Do you remember why you’re here? Goliath had them so distracted that they lost sight of the reason they were there. Satan wants to scare you so that you will give in, give up, and retreat.
