John 14:1-3
Jesus was speaking to His disciples, comforting them as He knew He would soon depart. When Jesus spoke to them, they understood it differently than we would because we don’t hold the same traditions that the Jewish people did.
The Jewish wedding tradition was that when a man and woman were betrothed to be married, the man would go off and build a home for his new bride. The construction of the home would take several months. The bride-to-be did not know exactly when the groom-to-be would be finished. When the man finished building his home, he would gather his friends and family and begin a wedding procession from his new home to his bride’s house. The bride would, no doubt, be waiting and watching in anticipation the entire time. The groom would then go to the bride’s house and call her to come out so he could take her to their new home.
